CORNWALL’S World Wheelchair Darts champion says he has “hit the bullseye” when it came to choosing the right car to take him to tournaments.
Ricky Chilton, who had his leg amputated nine years ago, picked up his Nissan X-Trail from Town and Country Nissan, in Marazanvose, near Truro.
The St Ives-based player has chosen the popular crossover because of its roomy interior and comfortable drive. He bought the car using the Motability scheme, which helps millions of disabled people exchange their mobility allowance for a new car, mobility scooter or electric wheelchair.
Ricky said: “The X-Trail is perfect for me. It’s the right height for me to get in and out of easily. It’s also extremely comfortable on long journeys. It means I can arrive at a match relaxed and fully prepared.”
Ricky won the Winmau WDDA World Masters Championships in 2014, a feat that was made all the more remarkable as he had to re-train himself to throw darts from a wheelchair, as he usually plays standing up using his crutches.
Wheelchair players throw from a standard oche, but the bullseye is lower by around 15 inches.
Sales Executive Mick Wheeler said: “I’m glad Ricky loves his X-Trail. It’s a cracking crossover which, as well as being comfortable to drive, is also one of the safest on the market with a maximum five-star safety rating.”
