YOUNG players from a Cornwall rugby club were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime coaching session with Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell on Sunday.
The youngsters, aged five to 12, who play for St Agnes RFC – the Aggie Tigers – were given special training to improve their sprinting by the star athlete who won his gold for Great Britain in the 4x100m relay at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
The session was arranged by local Nissan dealer Town and Country in Marazanvose. Campbell is a Nissan brand ambassador and Nissan is the automotive partner of Team GB and ParalympicsGB for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Speaking after the session at Richard Lander School, Campbell said: “It was a real joy to work with the team and I think the kids all really enjoyed themselves.
“Hopefully they’ve gone away with some tips to improve their speed which will help them be more successful in their rugby.”
Giles Hirst, Director of Rugby at St Agnes RFC, said: “It’s been a fantastic experience for the children. We’ve had 70 children here improving their sprinting and Darren’s been a real class act.
“The number of children and parents who showed up for the event on a wet Sunday morning show just how excited everyone’s been about Darren coming and everyone’s had a great time.
“We’d really like to thank Darren, Town and Country and Nissan for making it happen.”
Mick Wheeler, Sales Executive at Town and Country Nissan, said: “We were thrilled to be able to arrange this session which went brilliantly.
“So much of Nissan’s partnership with Team GB, ParalympicsGB and its brand ambassadors like Darren is about engaging with communities and generating excitement. This was the perfect example of that in action.”
