After the news that the award-winning Nissan Qashqai was the best-selling new car of 2022, it can now be revealed which was the most popular colour among UK buyers of the all-conquering crossover.
Most Qashqai purchasers opted for grey paint jobs – with the two shades available on Qashqai being Ceramic Grey and Gun Metallic.
In fact, it has emerged that grey is officially the nation’s favourite new car colour overall for the fourth year in a row.
More than a quarter (25.7%) of UK buyers chose the shade in 2022, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
A total of 415,199 grey cars were registered last year, up 1.7 per cent, while black and white took second and third place overall, completing a monochrome podium.
In a ‘Top 10 Colours by Car’ chart issued by the SMMT, Qashqai took four out of the top five places. Black took the runners-up spot; with blue in fourth place and red fifth.
Nissan offers its own eye-catching versions of all three hues, with Pearl Black; Ink Blue; Magnetic Blue; Fuji Sunset Red and Flame Red all available.
Grey was the top-selling colour across the board in every region and every county in the UK, bar the Scottish Borders where blue pushed it into second spot.
Red cars proved most popular in Berkshire with 6,735 registrations, while the highest number of green cars was registered in Greater London, at 1,894 units.
Exciting decision
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “Car colour choice theoretically proclaims something about who we are as drivers and buying a car today comes with many possibilities to customise your vehicle to match.
“After choosing from the market’s ever-growing choice of makes, models, powertrains, wheel trims and in-car tech, picking out the perfect paint is an exciting decision to make.
“While the most popular shades remained unchanged for 2022, for those looking to ensure their vehicle stands out from the crowd, there remains a huge variety of colour choices from across the rainbow to suit every character.”
A Nissan spokesperson said: ‘‘We are incredibly proud of the exterior paint choices we offer our customers, and it’s great to know that our colour palettes are so closely aligned with the favourite shades of the car-buying public.
‘‘Qashqai looks fabulous no matter what colour our customers opt for – and its appealing external appearance will have been a key factor in the car claiming the number one sales spot for 2022.’’
