A CAR dealership in Cardiff supported an event that took place in Caerphilly on Saturday to celebrate the men and women who make up the armed forces community.
Wessex Garages – Nissan on Hadfield Road was one of the principal sponsors for the third year running for the South Wales Armed Forces Day at Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields on Crescent Road.
Gareth Howells, General Manager at the dealership, explained: “We had such a fantastic day despite the rain and it was great to see so many people supporting our Armed Forces community.
“The day was a chance for us to show our gratitude and support to the men and women who make, and have made, such a huge contribution on behalf of our country. The spectacular military displays and activities made it a fun day out for all the family.
“We were incredibly proud to be one of the principle sponsors once again for the South Wales Armed Forces Day.”
Wessex Garages attended on the day with a selection of cars.
Gareth added: “This year we also sponsored the Silver Stars, the Parachute Display Team of the Royal Logistic Corps. The Silver Stars parachute display team consists of Regular Army and Army Reserve logistics personnel based at units across the UK, Germany and Cyprus.
“Their mission is to carry out parachute displays for both private and public events in order to demonstrate one of the many capabilities and sporting possibilities of the Royal Logistic Corps.”
Service personnel, Regular and Reserve, from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, as well as Cadets and Armed Forces veterans formed a parade at 11am on June 25 through the streets of Caerphilly town centre, before a special Drum Head Service at 11.55am was held against the backdrop of Caerphilly Castle.
Visitors to the free event were then invited to an afternoon of family fun on Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields on Crescent Road where the area was taken over by a collection of military stalls and marquees, demonstrations, an events arena and a licensed bar.
The aim of Armed Forces Day South Wales was to raise awareness of the contribution made by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.
It also gives people an opportunity to show their support to the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving personnel, to service families, veterans and cadets.
Gareth added: “This year’s Armed Forces Day event was particularly important as it marked some key anniversaries, including the centenary of the Battle of Mametz Wood, which began in early July 1916 as the Somme offensive was at its height.
“Hundreds of Welshmen died at Mametz, most of them volunteers, and thousands more were casualties.”
