Formula E can look a long way from the cars people buy in a Nissan showroom.
One is a single-seat racing car with huge power, slick tyres and a dramatic cherry blossom design. The other might be a Qashqai e-POWER, X-Trail e-POWER, ARIYA, LEAF or new electric MICRA. But the link is closer than it looks.
Nissan’s latest Formula E GEN4 car gives a glimpse of the technology areas that matter most to future electric cars: stronger motors, smarter all-wheel drive, better energy recovery, faster responses and more efficient use of every bit of battery power.
That doesn’t mean a 805bhp racing motor is about to appear in a showroom model. The useful connection is in the thinking behind it. Formula E gives Nissan engineers a high-pressure environment to develop electric performance, then use that knowledge to help shape the cars customers can actually drive every day.
What is Nissan’s new Formula E GEN4 car?
The GEN4 car is the next generation of Formula E racing car, and it represents a major step forward for the championship.
Nissan’s version is being developed ahead of Season 13 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which begins the GEN4 era. Compared with the current GEN3 Evo car, the new machine brings more power, more grip, permanent all-wheel drive and greater freedom for manufacturers to develop their own technology.
The numbers are serious. Nissan says the GEN4 car can produce up to 600kW, or 805bhp, accelerate from 0-62mph in 1.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 208mph.
That makes it the fastest-accelerating FIA-regulated racing car, according to Nissan.
It also brings permanent all-wheel drive to Nissan’s Formula E programme. That matters because all-wheel control is already a big Nissan road-car story, thanks to e-4ORCE.
Why does Formula E matter to Nissan road cars?
Formula E matters because it focuses on the same questions that matter in electric road cars:
– How do you get the most performance from a battery?
– How do you recover more energy when slowing down?
– How do you control power between the wheels?
– How do you make an electric car feel smooth, stable and confidence-inspiring?
On track, those questions decide lap times and race results. In a road car, they help decide how natural, efficient and enjoyable the car feels.
That’s why Formula E is useful for Nissan. It creates an extreme test bed for electric technology, where engineers have to make quick gains in efficiency, control and reliability. The lessons can then feed back into future Nissan EVs and electrified models.

How does Formula E technology reach showroom cars?
The connection is mainly through software, control systems and electric powertrain development.
A Formula E car is all about precision. The car has to manage power, braking, battery temperature, energy recovery and traction at very high speed, with very little room for waste. Every decision matters.
Those same areas are important in road cars, even if the pace is completely different. A Nissan EV or e-POWER model also has to manage energy smoothly. It needs to feel responsive when pulling away, stable in bad weather and efficient over a long journey.
That’s where the race-to-road link becomes useful. Formula E allows Nissan to develop ideas around electric motor control, battery management, regenerative braking and all-wheel-drive behaviour in a much more intense environment.
The result isn’t a race car for the road. It’s better knowledge, sharper systems and more confidence in the way future Nissan electric cars are engineered.
What is e-4ORCE?
e-4ORCE is Nissan’s electric all-wheel-control technology.
In showroom models, it’s designed to help manage traction, stability and ride comfort by controlling electric motor power and braking across the wheels. The idea is to make the car feel more secure and composed, especially when road conditions change.
You can already find e-4ORCE thinking in Nissan road cars such as X-Trail e-POWER with e-4ORCE, and on ARIYA models where available.
GEN4 makes this area even more interesting because permanent all-wheel drive is coming into Formula E. That gives Nissan engineers another opportunity to work on high-speed electric all-wheel control, then use that experience to support future road-car development.
The racing version is obviously far more extreme. But the basic challenge is familiar: put electric power exactly where it’s needed, as quickly and smoothly as possible.
Why is all-wheel drive so important?
All-wheel drive is about more than traction.
In an electric car, controlling power between the wheels can influence how the car accelerates, corners, brakes and settles over rough or slippery surfaces. Done well, it can make the car feel more secure without making the driver think about what’s happening underneath.
That’s one of the interesting parts of Nissan’s Formula E GEN4 story. The new car’s permanent all-wheel drive gives Nissan more scope to explore how electric power can be managed across both axles.
For road cars, that kind of knowledge can help with the things customers actually notice: smoother acceleration, better stability, stronger confidence in wet weather and a more settled feel when carrying passengers or luggage.
It’s the sort of technology that sounds complicated in a racing paddock, but feels very simple from behind the wheel.
What about regenerative braking?
Regenerative braking is another area where Formula E and road cars overlap.
In a Formula E race, recovering energy under braking is a huge part of the strategy. The car has to capture as much energy as possible, then use it again as efficiently as possible.
Road cars use the same basic principle, though in a much calmer way. In a Nissan EV, regenerative braking helps recover energy when the car slows down. In models with e-Pedal or e-Pedal Step, it can also make town driving feel smoother and easier.
The GEN4 Formula E car takes this idea to a much higher level. Formula E says the car has a dual-motor system capable of up to 700kW (938bhp) regenerative braking, recovering nearly half the energy used during a race.
That sort of racing demand helps push development. For showroom cars, the customer benefit is simpler: better efficiency, smoother control and a car that feels more natural to drive.
Which Nissan showroom cars already show this thinking?
Several current Nissan models already show how electric control can change the way a car drives.
The LEAF is the obvious starting point. It helped bring electric driving into the mainstream, and the latest generation adds much stronger range, modern technology and a more crossover-style shape.
The new electric MICRA brings Nissan EV driving into a smaller, more affordable package, with compact dimensions, strong range and modern connected technology.
The ARIYA takes Nissan electric driving in a more premium SUV direction, with a quiet cabin, smooth performance and advanced driver assistance technology.
Qashqai e-POWER and X-Trail e-POWER show a different side of the same thinking. Their wheels are driven by an electric motor, while a petrol engine generates electricity for the system. That gives a smooth electric-drive feel without needing to plug in.
Then there’s X-Trail e-POWER with e-4ORCE, which brings electric all-wheel control into a practical Nissan SUV.
None of these cars are Formula E racers. They don’t need to be. What they share is Nissan’s focus on using electric power to make driving smoother, smarter and more enjoyable.
Why the cherry blossom design matters
The cherry blossom theme is more than a striking look.
For Nissan, it connects the Formula E programme to the company’s Japanese identity. It also gives the GEN4 car a sense of new beginning, which feels appropriate for such a major step in electric racing.
There’s a nice link here with Nissan’s wider EV range too. LEAF, MICRA, ARIYA, Qashqai e-POWER and X-Trail e-POWER all show different ways Nissan is moving electric technology into everyday driving.
The Formula E car is the most dramatic expression of that story. The showroom cars are where customers experience the benefits.
What does this mean for future Nissan EVs?
The important point is that Formula E gives Nissan another way to develop electric technology quickly.
Future road cars won’t need 805bhp or a 208mph top speed. What they will need is better efficiency, better control, stronger charging performance, smarter energy recovery and a more natural driving feel.
Those are exactly the areas Formula E pushes hardest.
That’s why Nissan’s commitment to GEN4 matters. The company has already committed to Formula E until 2030, giving its engineers a long-term platform to keep developing electric racing technology alongside future road cars.
For customers, that’s good news. It means Nissan’s EV knowledge isn’t standing still. It’s being tested, improved and pushed in one of the toughest electric motorsport environments in the world.
