THE NISSAN LEAF played an important role in the reopening of an historic bridge over the River Tyne last week.
The market-leading 100% electric model and a classic sports car – representing the old and the new – were the first vehicles to cross the 132-year-old Ovingham Bridge in Northumberland when it was reopened with a special ceremony on Thursday.
A vital crossing connecting Prudoe and Ovingham, the narrow bridge had been closed to traffic for more than a year for a £3m refurbishment.
Organisers of the reopening ceremony, which was attended by more than 100 villagers and children from local schools, were keen to for an historic car and one of today’s most advanced models cross the bridge first.
They approached local Nissan dealer Wylam Garage in Hexham who provided a LEAF, which was applauded by the crowds as it crossed for the first time.
