MAGGIE Orme has become a bit of a mother figure to colleagues at NTCE.
An admin officer in the purchasing department, she’s always quick to lend a co-worker a hand and to offer advice and support where needed.
But it’s her commitment to charity and her tireless efforts organising fundraising events in the workplace that have made her so well known and well loved at Cranfield.
During her five years working for Nissan, Maggie, with the support of her “partner in crime” Anne-Marie Dowling, has organised scores of fundraisers – everything from non-uniform and wear a Christmas jumper to work days to bake sales and collections.
Collectively, these events have raised thousands of pounds for numerous worthy causes and have contributed massively to the team spirit and bond that exists at NTCE.
It’s this that saw her nominated by a colleague to carry the Olympic Torch on part of its journey to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Maggie has been chosen as one of the ‘Nissan Nine’ and will carry the Olympic flame for approximately 200 metres through the city of Belo Horizonte – the City of Beautiful Horizons – as part of its 95-day, 36,000km journey that will be seen by an estimated 90 percent of Brazil’s population.
She will be cheered on by her son, Thomas Orme, who will accompany her on the unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime trip.
Maggie, who is an active member of a local dancing club, said: “It still doesn’t seem real – I’m still trying to take it all in.
“The trip looks absolutely amazing and to actually be a part of the event rather than simply watching it is a real honour. My family are very proud.”
She added: “It’s lovely to think that somebody took the time to nominate me for the trip.
“I work with a lovely bunch of people and they’ve all been really quick to congratulate me.”
