A PORTSMOUTH mum has told how she gave birth to her daughter – in the back seat of her Nissan Micra.
Samantha Beasley’s contractions suddenly increased so her husband, Jerome, decided to dash her to hospital. But he didn’t even have time to start up their Micra as little Lara, who was four days early, made a dramatic entrance into the world.
Jerome, a Metropolitan Police officer, was on hand to deliver his 7lb 4oz daughter onto the back seat.
Samantha, 29, from Paulsgrove, said: “The Nissan Micra is bigger than you think – big enough to have a baby in! It was an experience, that’s for sure.”
Samantha said her contractions had been every 15 minutes earlier in the evening so the couple – who also have a son, Lex, aged three – weren’t too worried.
She said: “We dropped off our son to a neighbour’s house and thought we were in for a long night. But at about 10pm I climbed the stairs to go to bed and that seemed to set everything off.
“The contractions increased to every four minutes so we called the hospital who told us to come in.
“But by the time we got to our Nissan Micra I was pushing. I got into the back and within a few minutes out she came. I gave birth right outside our house. The neighbours had come out with towels but I’d already given birth.”
Jerome, 33, added: “It was all a bit of a rush. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I wasn’t that nervous – the adrenaline just kicked in and I was more concerned for Samantha and our daughter.
“It just goes to show how much room there really is in a Nissan Micra.”
To congratulate the couple, Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd sent them a Fortnum & Mason ‘new arrival’ gift hamper.
And local dealership WKB Nissan in Waterlooville, in Hambledon Road, is offering the family a free service of their Micra.
Samantha, an administrator at Heathrow Boutique, who gave birth to Lara at 10.27pm on Thursday, May 21, added: “We love our Micra – and now it’s even more special to us.
“Every time we go out for a drive as a family we will always remember what happened that day.”
