The Nissan LEAF is the best-selling electric vehicle on the car-buying comparison website Carwow, it has been announced.
In a list of the 10 best-selling electric vehicle sales in the year to date, the LEAF has a 32 per cent share of the market, with its nearest rival, the Zoe, manufactured by Alliance partner Renault, on 21 per cent.
The news comes shortly after Nissan celebrated the production of the 500,000th LEAF, 10 years after the first version of the car arrived to take the automotive world by storm.
Sepi Arani, head of OEM at Carwow, said: ‘Carwow saw a continued but dramatic increase in alternatively-fuelled vehicle sales in August year-on-year, with electric cars up 51 per cent and plug-in hybrids up 70 per cent.
‘‘While the government aims to phase out sales of conventional petrol and diesel cars by 2035, many consumers have already become far more environmentally aware since experiencing the positive impact lockdown had on air pollution. This in turn is helping to expedite the move towards zero-emission motoring in the UK.’’
In its reviews section, Carwow says the LEAF has a ‘‘strong performance and sleek design’’ adding that it stands out ‘‘thanks to looks that are more futuristic than other electric cars’’.
A Nissan spokesman said: ‘‘We’re delighted but not surprised that the LEAF is so popular with users of the Carwow website. With no exhaust emissions and low running costs, it’s a car that makes sense for your pocket and the planet.
‘‘Add in advanced technology and stunning design, and it’s easy to see why people are being drawn to LEAF in increasing numbers every day.’’
