NISSAN has today passed a major milestone in its Intelligent Mobility strategy with the unveiling of an ingenious new drive system – e-POWER.
The new system borrows EV technology proven and perfected in the Nissan LEAF and adds a small petrol engine to charge the high output battery when necessary.
This gives all the benefits of an EV without having to worry about charging the battery.
While conventional hybrid powertrains employ a low-output electric motor mated to an ICE engine, e-POWER’s petrol unit is not connected to the wheels and is only used to charge the battery.
As a result, e-POWER uses a smaller battery than the LEAF, but delivers the same driving experience as a full EV.
Fuel economy meanwhile is comparable to that of leading conventional hybrids.
