What is Nissan e-4ORCE?

Nissan has a long history of making unbeatable all-wheel-drive vehicles.

Whether it’s in the family-focussed X-Trail, or high performance GT-R, decades of research and development have meant Nissan knows more than most when it comes to powering more than just two wheels.

If you’re considering a Nissan X-Trail, you might have noticed the name ‘e-4ORCE’ listed in the specifications – or on a badge on the boot lid. 

e-4ORCE is Nissan’s latest all-wheel-drive system, designed to make the car feel more stable, more secure and more capable – both for everyday driving in poor weather conditions, and for crossing difficult terrain.

The easiest way to think of e-4ORCE is as a smarter, more responsive form of all-wheel drive. It uses electric motors and braking control to manage how the car behaves, rather than relying only on a traditional mechanical four-wheel-drive system.

The result is a system that can help with traction, balance and ride comfort, while working quietly in the background as you drive.

What does e-4ORCE mean?

The name e-4ORCE combines two ideas.

The “e” refers to electric motor drive. That is important because e-4ORCE is designed for cars that use electric motors, whether they are fully electric or use Nissan’s e-POWER hybrid technology.

The “4ORCE” part points to control across all four wheels. Nissan uses the “4” to represent four-wheel control, while “force” reflects the power, stability and reassurance the system is designed to deliver.

So while e-4ORCE is often described as all-wheel drive, it is more accurate to think of it as electric all-wheel control. It is not only about sending power to more wheels. It is about managing how the car accelerates, corners, slows down and stays balanced.

How does e-4ORCE work?

In an e-4ORCE Nissan, the car uses electric motors to control drive at both the front and rear.

Because electric motors respond very quickly, the system can adjust power delivery faster and more precisely than many traditional mechanical four-wheel-drive systems. That means the car can react quickly when it needs more grip, when the driver accelerates, or when the road surface changes.

e-4ORCE also works with the braking system. This is an important part of the technology, because it allows the car to help manage each wheel more carefully. The system can control power and braking to help keep the car more settled, rather than simply sending drive to the wheels and leaving the rest to the suspension and tyres.

In everyday terms, that can help the car feel more composed. When you pull away, the power can be delivered smoothly. When you corner, the system can help the car feel more stable. When you slow down, it can help reduce pitch and keep the body more level.

The driver does not need to manage any of this. The system monitors what is happening and makes adjustments in the background.

Why is e-4ORCE better than traditional four-wheel drive?

Traditional four-wheel-drive systems are usually mechanical. They often use a propshaft, differentials and clutches to send power from an engine to the front and rear wheels.

Those systems can be very effective, but they do have their downsides – often feeling slightly slow to react, and increasing fuel consumption. 

e-4ORCE works differently. Because it uses electric motor control, power can be adjusted very quickly. There is no need to wait for a traditional mechanical system to shift torque from one end of the car to the other. The front and rear motors can be controlled directly and precisely.

That gives e-4ORCE several advantages. First, it can respond quickly. Electric motors deliver power almost instantly, so the system can react in a smooth and immediate way when extra traction or stability is needed.

Second, it can be more precise. Rather than simply sending power through a mechanical driveline, e-4ORCE can manage front and rear motor output and braking control to help the car behave more predictably.

Third, it can improve comfort as well as grip. A traditional four-wheel-drive system is usually judged mainly on traction. e-4ORCE is also designed to help reduce pitching and body movement, which can make journeys feel smoother for passengers.

Fourth, it suits electrified cars better. In a model such as X-Trail e-POWER, the wheels are already driven by electric motors. e-4ORCE builds on that layout by using a second motor and advanced control systems to give the car all-wheel-drive capability without relying on a conventional mechanical transmission.

Finally, fuel consumption. In a conventional all-wheel-drive system, mechanical couplings between the front and rear of the car add extra ‘drag’ to the powertrain – in effect, it takes more effort for the engine to turn the wheels, which in turn uses more fuel. But because e-4ORCE relies on electric motors, this is lessened – and power is only delivered to the wheels with traction. 

What does it feel like from behind the wheel?

For most drivers, e-4ORCE may not be immediately obvious from behind the wheel – it should simply make the car feel more reassuring.

Pull away on a wet road and the system can help the car find traction smoothly. Drive along a twisting road and it can help the car feel more balanced. Brake firmly and it can help keep the car settled. Carry passengers and it can help make acceleration and deceleration feel less abrupt.

That last point is easy to overlook. A system like e-4ORCE is not only about the driver. Nissan has also designed it with passenger comfort in mind.

It is still the driver’s responsibility to drive to the conditions. e-4ORCE does not overcome the laws of physics, and it does not replace careful driving. But it can give the car a more stable, confident character in situations where grip, balance and smoothness matter.

Is e-4ORCE only useful in bad weather?

No. Bad weather is an obvious benefit, but it is not the only one.

In rain, snow or on loose surfaces, e-4ORCE can help manage traction by controlling power and braking across the car. That can be useful when pulling away, climbing a slippery hill or driving on uneven ground.

But the system is also useful in normal driving. It can help the car feel more composed when accelerating out of a junction, changing direction, travelling along rougher roads or slowing down with passengers on board.

That makes e-4ORCE different from older ideas of four-wheel drive. Many drivers used to think of 4WD as something mainly for mud, snow, towing or rural life. e-4ORCE is broader than that. It is designed to improve the way the car feels in everyday use, not just when conditions become difficult.

How does e-4ORCE work with e-POWER?

In the Nissan X-Trail, e-4ORCE is available with Nissan’s e-POWER system.

That combination is important. In an e-POWER car, the wheels are driven by electric motors. The petrol engine is used to generate electricity, rather than directly driving the wheels.

On two-wheel-drive X-Trail e-POWER models, the electric motor drives the front wheels. On e-4ORCE versions, an additional electric motor drives the rear wheels, giving the car electric all-wheel control.

The benefit is that the car can deliver all-wheel-drive capability while keeping the smooth, electric-style driving feel that e-POWER is known for. You still refuel with petrol as normal, and you do not plug the car in, but the way the car delivers power feels closer to an EV than a conventional hybrid.

Which Nissan models have e-4ORCE?

For UK buyers, the most relevant current Nissan model with e-4ORCE is the X-Trail.

The X-Trail is Nissan’s larger family SUV, and e-4ORCE is available on selected e-POWER versions. It suits the car well because X-Trail is often chosen by families who want more space, extra confidence and, depending on version, seven-seat practicality.

e-4ORCE has also previously been offered on all-wheel-drive versions of the Nissan ARIYA. On those models, the system uses dual electric motors to provide electric all-wheel control in a fully electric SUV.

It made an appearance in ARIYA NISMO, Nissan’s performance-focussed variant of the ARIYA, and is also available on other Nissan models in markets like Japan, where challenging weather conditions are more frequent than here in the UK.

Who should choose e-4ORCE?

e-4ORCE will make most sense for drivers who want extra confidence from their Nissan.

That might mean people who live in rural areas, regularly drive on wet or uneven roads, or want more reassurance in winter. It may also appeal to families who want a larger SUV to feel as stable and smooth as possible when carrying passengers and luggage.

It is also worth considering if you like the idea of all-wheel drive, but do not want the more mechanical feel of a traditional 4WD system. e-4ORCE is designed to feel smooth and automatic. It works in the background rather than asking the driver to think about how the system is operating.

For X-Trail buyers, it is likely to appeal most to those choosing the car for family life, longer trips, mixed road conditions or occasional journeys where extra traction is useful.

A more modern kind of all-wheel drive

Nissan e-4ORCE takes the familiar idea of four-wheel drive and updates it for electrified cars.

It can help with traction in poor conditions, but that is only part of the story. Its real strength is the way it uses electric motor control and braking control to help the car feel more balanced, smoother and more predictable.

For drivers, the benefit is straightforward. More confidence when grip is limited. More stability when the road changes. More comfort for passengers. Less for the driver to think about.

In a model such as the Nissan X-Trail, that makes e-4ORCE a useful piece of technology: practical, reassuring and well suited to everyday family driving.
