NISSAN’S all-electric hatchback, LEAF, has become something of a phenomenon since its launch just over three years ago – and even those people who live in the most remote corners of the world are big fans.
For instance, Bhutan, the isolated Himalayan country renowned for championing ‘Gross National Happiness,’ is keen to become a leading global electric-vehicle nation.
Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn have announced a partnership which will see both parties work toward achieving Bhutan’s ambitious clean-energy goals.
Nissan, the global leader in zero-emission vehicles, will build on its EV expertise to electrify the country’s car parc and help Bhutan develop its charging infrastructure.
Nissan is happy to provide its best-known electric car, the LEAF, to help things move along.
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said the deal would involve hundreds of electric cars. Over time, he predicts it will be thousands. Roughly 100,000 LEAFs are on the road worldwide at the moment.
Mr Ghosn said: ‘There is a lot of courage, a lot of will, a lot of vision behind the Prime Minister of Bhutan’s positioning on the electric car and I feel good about supporting this.
‘Obviously, it’s within the interests of Nissan because we have our own interests here. But I think this can create a lot of other examples in the future and hopefully Bhutan can become a showcase.’
