The chairman of the car dealership group FJ Chalke, based in South-West England, has retired after almost 50 years.
The departure of James Chalke is a significant moment for the family-run business, which operates busy Nissan dealerships in Wincanton and Yeovil, both in Somerset, and represents a number of other respected manufacturers.
In a heartfelt farewell message, James expressed deep gratitude for the rewarding journey he has been on over the years, reflecting on both the challenges and successes that have shaped the present-day company.

He emphasised the privilege of having worked alongside countless dedicated and valued colleagues, making his years at the helm truly special.
James added: ‘‘Naturally, I have mixed feelings as I leave FJ Chalke after such a long time. I’m looking forward to more free time, of course, but I’ll certainly miss the camaraderie of working at one of the best – and friendliest – dealer groups in the UK.
‘‘I’d like to extend my very best wishes to the FJ Chalke team, and I’m sure they will prove adept at navigating the upcoming challenges and fostering the ongoing growth of a historic family business that has stood the test of time. I know I leave the company in good hands.’’
James said the celebrations to mark FJ Chalke’s 90th anniversary in 2019 were a particular career highlight. The recent presentation of long-service award from Nissan, marking 25 years with the brand, was another memorable moment, he added.
James leaves behind a strong team of directors and staff dedicated to the company’s continued success. In retirement, he will be looking to reduce his golf handicap as well as spend time travelling with his wife.
George Chalke, a member of the fourth generation of the Chalke family and James’s son, will step into the role of Chairman. Steve Fowler will continue as Managing Director, continuing the great work being carried out by a strong board that also includes branch directors Scott Young, Martin Berkley and Mark Swain.
Exciting new chapter
George said: ‘‘On behalf of the whole company, I’d like to express thanks to my father for the work he has done over the past 50 years. He leaves the business in great shape and although the automotive industry is certainly facing headwinds at the moment, we couldn’t be better placed to deal with the challenges ahead.
‘‘As we look forward to an exciting new chapter, FJ Chalke is poised for continued success, driven by our dedicated team and our commitment to delivering exceptional service to our customers.’’
With dealerships across South Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, FJ Chalke & Vale Motors is a family-run dealer group with a proud history of serving its local communities since 1929.
