A CAR dealership in Cardiff held a competition at a fundraising fete to raise money for the Layla-Mae Appeal.

Wessex Garages asked people to guess how many rugby balls it could fit in the boot of a Nissan Qashqai during the event, which was held by the Lollipop Lane Playgroup at Celtic Way Community Centre in Rhoose.

Gareth Howells, General Manager at Wessex Garages on Hadfield Road, said: “We were delighted we could help the playgroup raise money for the Layla-Mae Appeal.

“We held a competition to guess how many Cardiff Blues’ rugby balls were in the boot of a Nissan Qashqai. We charged £3 per guess and the winner won a Nissan GT-R track day experience.

“We also worked with the Cardiff Blues to get a signed shirt to give to the playgroup for its raffle. Cardiff Blues’ rugby player Josh Navidi also made a special guest appearance at the fete to help sell raffle tickets, present the prizes and sign rugby balls for fans. After the competition we also sold the rugby balls for £3 each to raise even more money for the appeal.

“The total raised so far from the fundraising fete is more than £1,700 and they are still counting for a final figure.”

The Layla-Mae Appeal is to raise money for eight-year-old, Layla-Mae, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of five, along with severe complex epilepsy, which has also caused autism and significant impairment to her memory and understanding.

Layla-Mae was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2014 for specialist treatment and brain surgery and still remains under its specialist care. The Layla-Mae Appeal is to support Layla-Mae and her family by easing the costs and the financial implications of the journeys to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
